Fish of the Month
Cod
Cod is a popular fish with a mild flavor, low fat content and a dense flaky white flesh.
Cod is found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and is consumed in great quantities in the United Kingdom, Portugal and Spain. Cod is also quite popular in Canada and the United States, but overfishing caused a moratorium on the cod fishing industry off the Atlantic coasts of Newfoundland, which affected the industry significantly.
Atlantic cod are usually between 10 to 25 pounds, but there have been records set at individual fish weighing more than 200 pounds. Pacific cod are found off the coasts of British Columbia and Northern US coastal regions. The Pacific cod are three times bigger than the Atlantic cod, and are darker in colour.
Cod livers are very high in Vitamin A, D, and E and are also high in Omega 3 Fatty Acids. The cod liver is usually processed to make cod liver oil, which can be found in both the liquid and pill forms.
